Hello Edward and All the Goodfellows of SPC Class 66,

Greetings from the Far North and wishing you and your families a happy, healthy and halcyon New Year !

Please accept my apologies for the tardiness in replying to your calls for ideas and suggestions to take our class scholarship fund from germination to fruition. I have been giving it a few midddle-of-the-night thoughts (as mature insomniacs do) and here it is what my dreams are:

1. The Prologue.
The SPC Class of 66 Scholarship Fund is unique. It will be the only one in the history of the Universe, established by US. There will be no other ever exactly like it anywhere, anytime. And WE, a real minority of a few, who by the fickle finger of fate had come together in the relatively, almost unmeasurably, short expanse of 5-9 years in the midst of eons of human existence, in this tiny dust of an island called Hongkong, and get to know each other, to become lifelong best of friends, to share and survive the experience of getting an education in a highly demanding environment, and succeeding so to advance into higher education and gratifying careers, as well as simultaneously enjoying possibly the most blissful years of our lives ( as most of us found it utterly incredulous when Hung Loh Tsah told us so but now belatedly acknowledge), have indeed been blessed.

We are what we are today owes majorly to the riches given to us while we were at SPC. Now it is our turn to give back, to say thanks and to lend a hand to some future fellow SPC boys so they too can hope to do bigger and better things, to have a better prospect for themselves and for society at large. Of course, there are a million other worthwhile charitable causes we can get involved in, but this one is personal. It is about appreciating our own treasured past good fortune, and realizing our prevalent goodwill into true benefits for the less fortunate and needy from where we came, to boot. For what it is worth, I imagine that it could also be arranged such that the Fund will be a legacy for those contributors who would like to be acknowledged for future references. In the end, it is going to be an act of the heart. It is about feeling good about ourselves, about being thankful for our good fortune and an honourable desire to share it with future generations.

2. The Substance.

It is about MONEY !

Fred Kan (Do they still sell Siu Cheung Kan in HK?) has mentioned that to exist as a sustainable, stand alone, meaningful scholarship fund in HK, it will likely take a million US bucks to be successful. He may very well be right, but the finance guys amongst us may give us some more solid numbers based on propositions of furure awards distributions, projected return on investments, and initial and continuing contributions.

A million US dollars is indeed a significant sum of money. However, SPC Class 66 had about 240 graduates. Assuming that we can establish contact with 80-100 of them and half of those are willing and financially fortunate enough to participate, there can be 40-50 contributors to start with.

Now if we roughly divide a million among these, it seems much more attainable, especially if we would entertain the concept of divided, multiple payments. In fact, I will be proud to surmise that among us that there are a few good men who could actually contribute that sum single-handedly without blinking an eyelash.

But, this is a class act and I say that everyone who can afford to help, should. Big or small does not matter.

What matters is the thought and the caring, the camaraderie of getting a good deed done, having a great time doing it, and sharing the joy of the recipients of your generous gifts for years to come.

One sleepless night when I was ruminating about this particular issue, the number 1/200 ie. 0.5% kept flashing in the darkness of the room. If, each of us who are moved to get this glorious chance-of-a-lifetime project off the ground commit 0.5% of our individual networth to it, I am reasonably confident that that million dollar target is not just eminently feasible but will be surpassed by a mile (million?) !

3. The Nitty Gritty.

Personally I would prefer our scholarship fund to be standing alone instead of being merged into the SPC pool. It is the one and only SPC Class 66's gift to our beloved alma mater and should be distinctively recognised as such. Although understandbly more complex to set up and maintain, I would think that in the beginning, the financial and legal experts among us could get it started. In the long run, will a scholarship trust be a permanent solution?

I would also suggest that :
Scholarships should be awarded on balanced criteria of scholarstic achievement and financial need.

Scholarships be awarded annually to SPC graduates going towards a University or College degree, during an annual awards dinner/meeting of the SPC 66 gang.

That there be a memorial/plague placed in the SPC campus commemorating those of us who have done well by our education at SPC, not so much as to honour us but to serve as an encouragement for future youngsters to do better.

Respectfully submitted,
Paul Shum Wai Ming.
aka Dai Tau Fugt.

spb66 #48: Nelson Cheng's contributions

Gents,

Here's some oldies but goodies from Nelson's collection.

If you have any old photos, please send them to me at gordonjang@hotmail.com. By the way, recent photos are welcome as well.

Thanks for your contribution Nelson.

spb66 #47: Another contribution from Patrick Pak-Wo To

Hi Gents,

Here's more photos from Patrick.

http://s241.photobucket.com/albums/ff153/borninnanking/Patrick%20To/?action=view&slideshow=true

These photos hit home particularly for me. Who would have thought that Steve Wong Sai Hoo that was standing beside me in the Form Vb class picture now lives within 10 km from me in Toronto, 41 years later and thousands of miles from Hong Kong.

Enough of my nostalgia. Keep those old photos coming my way (gordonjang@hotmail.com).

Many thanks to Patrick.

spb66 #46: Snap shots from To Pak-Wo Patrick's treasure chest

Hi Gents,

Here's a few snap shots that Patrick had carefully tucked away in his treasure chest. They sure bring back fond memories.

http://s241.photobucket.com/albums/ff153/borninnanking/Alumni%20contributions/?action=view&slideshow=true

If any of you folks have old photos that you'd like to share, please scan them and email them to me at gordonjang@rogers.com. I'll put them up on the blog. Please try to scan them in high-res (300 dpi or higher). If you don't have a scanner, you can take them to a photo development place to have them digitized. Alternatively, you can have them delivered to me. I'm in Toronto, Canada, but there are St Paul's alumni that travel back and forth TO and HK quite often. I'm sure we can get them hand delivered without getting lost.

Thank you Patrick for sharing your pix.

spb66 #45: Choir

Gentlemen,

Here it is, the well publicized choir. Some of you may find the image quality less than desirable, on account of the resolution of the original. You can put lipstick on an elephant, but she ain't going to look pretty.

Whoever owns the original (paper) copy, you may want to take it to a film development shop, have it professional digitized in high-res and email me the image. I can take another shot at uploading it again.

spb66 #41: Choir Song (contributed by Philip Chow)

Choir Song

GLORIOUS APOLLO

Glorious Apollo from on high beheld us,
Wand'ring to find a temple for his praise.

Sent Polyhymnia hither to shield us,
While we ourselves such a structure might raise.

Thus then combining, hands and hearts joining,
Sing we in harmony Apollo's praise.

Here ev'ry gen'rous sentiment awaking,
Music inspiring unity and joy.

Each social pleasure giving and partaking,
Glee and good humour our hours employ.

Thus then combining, hands and hearts joining,
Long may continue our unity and joy.

Glorious Apollo is a glee composed by Samuel Webbe Sr. in 1787 as a theme song for the newly founded London Glee Club.

A glee is a part song, usually scored for at least three solo voices, and normally sung unaccompanied.

Glee singing societies became wildly popular in the 18th century, and remained so throughout the 19th century. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, glee singing clubs gave way to choral societies, with a handful of exceptions. As communal choruses supplanted the earlier clubs, the term glee club was increasingly used to describe collegiate ensembles performing glees and other light music in informal circumstances.

Webbe's glee took root with the Harvard Glee Club, the oldest such group in America, which still sings this song. The Glee Club is part of the Holden Choruses of Harvard University, which also include the all-female Radcliffe Choral Society and the mixed-voice Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum. All three groups are led by Conductor Dr. Jameson Marvin and Associate Conductor Kevin C. Leong.

Webbe wrote the text as well as the music, and in it he faithfully traced the club's history; for the first couple of years, the meetings circulated among members' homes. This is reflected in the second line, which notes that the club was "wand'ring to find a temple for his praise."

It finally found its "temple" when the club's meetings moved to the Newcastle Coffee House.

Webbe's references to the gods of the Greek pantheon were part and parcel of the Georgian gentlemen's singing clubs' identification with the learning and leisure activities of the classical world.

Webbe structured the poem so that the first two couplets of each verse were sung by solo voices, with all the members joining in at the refrain, "Thus then combining. . . .". Written for three male voice parts with a three-part choral refrain, it remains to this day one of the most delightful remnants of the culture of Georgian England.

(Information provided by Henry Gaw)

SPC won the Intermediate English choir the year (Spring 1964) we performed Glorious Apollo.

However, we did even better the following year (spring 1965) w/The Toreador song and won the senior English Choir section and then beat out the winners of all the other sections:

Intermediate English, boys
Intermediate English, girls
Senior English, boys
Senior Chinese, boys
Senior Chinese, girls
Senior English, girls
Senior English mixed (coed) choir
for the highly coveted "Dr. Lam Chi Fung Cup" for the best choir among all the winners that year..

Moses Wu was of course our choir leader, but does anybody remember that our pianist was So How Leung, a highly talented pianist. He also happened to be Miss So Kok Chun's youngest brother and later on became the exclusive pianist for the famous HK Chinese pop singer Roman Tam (Law Mun). So How Leung was 2 years ahead of us at SPC.

(Information provided by Philip Chow)

The Toreador Song
For a toast, your own will avail me, senor, senor,
For all your men of war.
Like all Toreador brothers hail me,
In a fight, in a fight, we both take delight.

All at once, there is silence, there is silence,
Oh! What is going on.
….
….

Oh…How he shakes his banderillas,
How madly now he runs,
The sand is red and wet.
See them running, see them climb the barrier.
Only one has not fled.

Come on, make ready!
Come on, come on!

Toreador makes ready.
Toreador, Toreador.
And think on her, on her who all can see,
On a dark-eyed lady
That love waits for thee, Toreador,
That love, love waits for thee.

spb66 #40: News from Ip Sing Yiu

from "Ip, Wallace (ipws)"
to Edward Sin
date Oct 10, 2007 10:39 AM

Dear Edward,

I wanted to post a brief message on the spb66 blog site to say hello to everyone, but after some poking around I realized that you are the only person who can post on the site. So here's what I want to say to all my buddies of 40 years...

Hello sixty-sixers,

This is Ip Sing Yiu. The procrastinator that I am, I was going to wait until a nice round number like 40 years before I wrote, but Nico Choi and Henry Gaw have made it all but impossible. Nico, just about the only SPB I've stayed in touch with over the years because his children went to grad school at Cincinnati, got me a copy of the spb66 year book that you guys so nicely put together. This alone cost me several evenings of flipping through the book and trying to remember everyone. Forty years is a long time, but somehow a lot of memories managed to resurface. It was fun, but it also reminded me how long it had been since I left old HK and practically left my life behind.

Then, two weeks ago, Henry practically showed up at my doorstep and bought me and my wife a lovely lunch. He had been on business at his alma mater, Purdue, and on his way home to the West Coast, met up with us at the Indianapolis airport, an easy two-hour drive from our home in Cincinnati. We had a wonderful time reminiscing about old St. Paul's, re-attaching nicknames to real people, catching up on gossips, and updating one another about the people that we were in contact with. For me, those were precious few, but Henry seems to be in touch with almost everyone. What a guy!

In case you are wondering, I've had a pretty pedestrian 40 years since leaving HK. Realizing that I really wanted to do research after college, I entered graduate school. After way too many years of fellowships, I became faculty at the University of Cincinnati and now do research in cancer and brain tumors, and teach med school. Government funding for research is very tight these days, but I've managed to be one of the few lucky ones who still enjoy a fairly high level of grant support. It probably won't last long given these horrible times!

Sadly, I will not be able to attend the grand reunion in November. It sounds fantastic, but med school teaching is in fullswing and two grant renewals await my attention. I do plan to see as many of you as I can next year in Toronto, where I understand the next North American reunion is happening. In the meantime, if any of you are traveling across the US and happen to be flying Delta, there is a very good chance that you will be making a stop at Cincinnati, one of Delta's major hubs. If that happens, I'll never forgive you if you don't give me a shout or shoot me an email ahead of time so I can have a beer with you. I live 20 minutes from the airport. My cell phone is always with me and my email is on 24-7.

Best regards,
Wally

Reunion luncheon on August 25, 2007 at the Red Coach Inn, Niagara Falls, New York

The rustic Red Coach Inn overlooking the raging Niagara River meters away from the Falls was the site of the recent reunion luncheon of the Class of 66. Thirteen classmates from the Greater Toronto area, in four separate cars, crossed over to the US side for a rendezvous with Edward Sin and his family.

Edward, just retired after a productive career with the HK government, drove up from Binghamton, New York. Edward and Nancy are proud parents to Aaron, SPC Class of 1995, who earned a Ph.D. from Cornell (in 2002) and Celestine, who will begin her second year in Electrical Engineering at SUNY at Binghamton. We were delighted to meet Edward’s lovely family!

Steve Wong Sai-Hoo’s wife Linda and Nelson Cheng Yui-Hing’s wife Rita also joined us for the occasion.

This was a most enjoyable afternoon as classmates caught up with their long lost buddies and made new acquaintances. Each classmate had the opportunity to share with the rest of the group what mischief he has gotten himself into over the past forty-one years (sort of).

All of us agreed that we should hold another reunion soon, and make sure that those who couldn’t join us this time (such as Gordon Jang Kwok-Tung, Timothy Leung Kam-Fai, Tony Tam Man-Kwong, Bobby Siu Chee-Yiu, Paul Shum Wai-Ming, Enoch Mo Yiu-Chor) would join us then.

We wish to thank Nico Choi Lap-Chung for suggesting the venue and Tennyson Ng Chung for making the reservation.

If you are a recipient of alumni email, you should be well aware of the mentorship scheme. It is a scheme for St. Paul's College and the SPC Alumni Association to join hands to provide mentoring and sharing of life experience to our F6 boys. It started in 2004 and it is the third session now.

Our new principal John Kennard is very supportive to this scheme, as he firmly believes that we are all in one big family under SPC flag. At the assembly yesterday, he openly encouraged our F6 boys to join the scheme.

We are now under the usual process of recruiting new senior mentors. Commitment is not that much - you just need to attend the inauguration at the school on 30/9 (and take the chance to visit the new school extension block), meet some F6 boys (normally 4-5 in a group) once a while (say once every two months) to have some chats or have some activities with them, and attend a high table dinner around Easter 2007. If you feel you could share your life experience with our younger St. Paul boys, do join us to help our Alma Mater.

No matter you have or have not indicated your availability before, I would be most grateful if you could re-register again by replying to this email, so that I could take stock and make arrangements. Pls also copy your reply to Mr. Darren Lam (khlamd@yahoo.com) for administration purpose.

Regards,

Vincent Fung

Chairman, SPCAA

//////////////////////////////////

Some further information from Philip Cheung:

The objective is for those Form 6ers who are interested to know in advance a little bit of the working/business life they enter eventually, hopefully from the senior &/or junior mentors whose profession or business is one he is aiming for.

The school will pair the junior mentor (under 30 years old, whose job is to liaise between the students and the senior mentor, as well as sharing work experience) and the senior member. The boys will then choose the group’s profession according to his interest and preference but the school will have the final decision.

In my case, we spent time over walks (what else) and meals, and factory visits in China, to chat about garment business. They are very interested to know ours SPC days and how life was without TV.

Learning for me is a 2 way track, as I get to know the inside world of young people these days that much more. I learnt not to approach them as another tutor in order to have interesting conversations with them. They could be your friends if you try not to lecture them.

You meet students of all kinds. Some are elite and some just join for the sake of it. I have had a head prefect, and have one who never turn up. You have to be patient with them because they are, after all, young students.

They are supposed to learn table manner at the High Table dinner. A lot of them have their first zip of wine. Selected senior mentors were guests speakers the first year, Tsang Yuk-Shing the second. Do you know that chap on the third:-

spb66 #29: Scholarship Fund

Shum Wai Ming proposed to set up SPC66 Class & Teachers Scholarship Fund.

Please refer Shum's message for detail:

I believe that it was Monday, September 7, 1959, when the class of 66 first congregated unceremoniously at SPC.

It is a great joy to see (read) that the OLD gang is so interested and energetic in renewing our long neglected but obviously unforgotten comraderie and memories of our years at SPC.

Hung Lo Zhai was so right when he taught us that the best friends in one's life are mostly made in one's formation years. The current, timely, revived reconnection efforts of SPC66 is a living proof of his wisdom.

In reflection, I do not think too many will disagree with me that, as a group, we are what we are today have a tremendous lot to do with what we learned at SPC from SOME of our experienced and knowledgeable teachers (although certainly not all of us were cognizant of that at the time). We owe them and SPC an eternal gratitude.

In line with those ruminations, I dare to propose for the thoughtful men (I think I am politically safe here) of SPC66 to consider the establishment of the SPC66 Class & Teachers Scholarship Fund, with charitable gifts from us. Its purpose is to assist scholarstic, matriculating SPC students with demonstratable financial needs to pursue higher education, who will otherwise have to forgo their dreams of a better future for themselves and possibly even greater benefits to society.

To some of us, this idea may sound dreamy, difficult, intangible or irrelevant. But I think it is a marvelous act to show our gratefulness to and to leave our remembrance at SPC for generations of classes to come (if we pull it off! ). Who knows, this may even start a trend for other alumnus classes to follow suit and therefore benefit many more worthy future SPC students. Or, if OUR scholarship fund turns out to be humongously successful and rich, they may even name something( maybe a faculty of medicine somewhere) after us!!

It is with the deepest regret that I will not be attending the reunion in 11/07. However, I am more than happy to donate the estimated cost of the non-trip to the SPC66 Class & Teachers Scholarship Fund. It is a mere drop in the bucket for sure, but for the altruism that the mighty flow of the Yangtze starts yet with a single snow flake up on the mountain of Qinghai !

From afar and yet feeling close,

Paul Wai Ming Shum.
aka Dai Tau Fudg.

/////////////////////////////////////////

While there is wide-spread support, Frank Fu offers some practical points for thought:

Dear Philip and Edward:

1. To form a Trust needs legal document to set up.

2. Authorised signatures are difficult to agree upon.

3. I suggest that we agree on the kind of scholarship to award first such as $10,000 for "the Best Model Student" (selected by teachers or peers) or the Most Outstanding Form 6 student (based on HKCEE results).

4. We can commit this for 5 years and then review the amount of the scholarship and the selection criteria/title. Thus, a target of $100,000 to start.

4. Open an account with SPC and deposit fund raised and ask the School to administer it during Speech Day/Prize Presentation Day in the name of Class of 1966.

5. They have many scholarships already at SPC and we need to ask the Council for endorsement.

Just some thoughts to make the project simple and manageable.

Yours,

Frank Fu

Subject: Re: donation from class of 66

Dear Philip

Thank you for the message and thank you again for the kind offer from the Class of '66.

The College is about to announce the formation of The Foundation, the purpose of which is to secure the financial well-being of the College in to the future. All donations /bequests /gifts to the College from this point will be directed to The Foundation, the executive committee of which will decide on particular disbursements. This will help enormously with future planning.

The two key projects that will require significant short to medium term funding are:

1. the renovation of the Wong Ming Him Hall (approximately HK$5 million) and

2. the relocation of the Primary School (we estimate that we might need to 'top up' government funding by about HK$30 million).

The dollar value of any individual donation will be considered by the Foundation executive committee, for example, large donations might be reflected in exclusive naming rights to particular buildings in the new Primary School, smaller donations cited on an honour board etc etc.

I hope that this is of some assistance in your deliberations. However, the immediate need is in probably in bricks and mortar as opposed to scholarships for individual boys etc.

Best

John

Lastest news:

Leung Siu Kwong, Jacob, will be glad to collect any views classmates would like to raise about donation.

Task force will be organized after the Grand Re-union of Nov.2, 2007.

spb66 #28: Game proposed by Henry Gaw

A game suggested by Henry Gaw:

Name the teacher’s name (listed first) followed by his/hers nickname and
the subject that he/she taught.

I will start w/a few and please add to my list:

1. Hung Man Fong, AKA Hung Lo Chai, Chinese. Always spent 45 minutes each class telling us his WWII stories and his glorious old days as ShumSuiPo’s District Head and then 5 to 10 minutes of Chinese lessons.

2. Sung Man Chun, AKA Tai Tau Sung. Assistant Headmaster. Subject?

3. Liu How Sway, AKA Tai Tau Whu Ying, or Big Head Fly, Math.

4. Reverend Stewart (?) Speak, AKA See Bit Lo. (what’s his first name?), Bible, Headmaster.

5. One of my favorite Chinese teacher, AKA Hing Tung Lo, whose always started his sentences with “Cair Li See”. What’s his real name?

6. Lau Sir (what’s his full name), AKA Sing Sing Lo (as in Gorilla)

7. Lee? AKA Hum Seun Lee (Salty and Sour Plum). He taught Handwork and has the entire ground floor of Wong Ming Him Hall for his classroom/workshop.

Feel free to correct my error(s), if any. After all, we are all getting into the early state of Senioritis, Dementia, or God forbid, Alzheimer’s (better known as Oldtimer’s) Disease.

Bo Suk, how about putting this game format onto an Excel Spread sheet as an attachment and put it onto our blog site so that we can all add onto this list?

spb66 #26: Message from John Leung

John Leung <john.leung@NAU.EDU>Reply-To: John.Leung@NAU.EDUOrganization:
NAUTo: 'frankfu' <frankfu@hkbu.edu.hk>

Hi Frank,

I just received the copy of the new SPC Class of ’66 “yearbook” – or should I call it the reunion book. Thank you so very much for sending it to me.

It brings back so many wonderful memories, and at the same time, it is such a challenge to try to recognize some of the “new faces” from ancient and hoary recollections, if you know what I mean.

Some are relatively easy – even if I had not had the pleasure and fortune of seeing you a few times in the last couple of years, I probably would be able to recognize you. The same goes for Siu Kwong and Siu Kai, and Kan Siu Cheong. But for some others it’s quite a stretch of the imagination.

In any case, I am utterly thankful and at your debt for being so considerate. I have actually lost quite a few pounds from the way I was even the last time we met in 2005, and during my surgery in March, I started growing a beard, so there are some recent changes to the way I look. I hope that doesn’t throw you off when we meet again, although that might not be too soon –

I will definitely not be able to join you all for the reunion “festivities” this
summer and fall, but perhaps I can plan something for next year.

Anyway, I don’t have any good recent photographs of myself (usually I am behind the camera instead of in front of the lens) but last month we went back to Rhode Island for a short visit. My in-laws (Janet’s mom and dad) live in Rhode Island,

And I was also invited by the administration of my doctoral alma mater, Brown U, to go in for a brief consultation with them about their plans and ideas for a rapidly developing collaboration and exchange program between Brown and CUHK.

I had a great time in Rhode Island. We stayed at this house which we rented for the week that is located pretty close to the shores of Narragansett Bay, across from Newport. Although I ate my fill of the great seafood of New England, however, I didn’t gain much weight at all.

Anyway, I’m sending you a picture of myself and Janet on the porch outside this house that is not really ours. It’s perhaps a bit too casual, but it’s recent. The other is a photograph of my making a brief presentation at the University of Rhode Island. Please feel free to share with other SPC folks when you meet for the lunches and dinners.

I understand that my colleague Pin Ng will be coming to HK in about ten days’ time. Thank you so much, Frank, for taking care of him, and for helping him obtain the Fulbright.

Pin’s a good badminton player – much better than I ever was and certainly much much better than I am now, and perhaps you guys could hit it off in various ways besides the academic. I hope all is well, and please give my best to your family, as well as to the SPC friends.

Best wishes and regards for peace,

John

Reunion luncheon on August 25, 2007 at the Red Coach Inn, Niagara Falls, New York

The rustic Red Coach Inn overlooking the raging Niagara River meters away from the Falls was the site of the recent reunion luncheon of the Class of 66. Thirteen classmates from the Greater Toronto area, in four separate cars, crossed over to the US side for a rendezvous with Edward Sin and his family.

Edward, just retired after a productive career with the HK government, drove up from Binghamton, New York. Edward and Nancy are proud parents to Aaron, who earned his Ph.D. from Cornell and Celestine, who will begin her second year in Electrical Engineering at SUNY at Binghamton.
