Our Heavenly Father, Lord of all creations:
We thank You sincerely for bringing us together this evening to celebrate our vibrant and thriving brotherly fellowship which started at St. Paul’s College more than five decades ago.
On this occasion, we remember fondly Chan Yuk Choi and Chan Hung Lit who have passed away. We miss them dearly and pray earnestly that You continue to grant their loved ones and family members Your sustaining love and care. Strengthen and comfort them when they are facing hardships.
We also give You thanks with all our hearts for Your providential care and sovereign guidance which now become all the more important as we aspire to grow into maturity and fullness of life amidst uncertainties and difficult situations.
Teach us to walk in Your way trustfully. Instead of lamenting our missed opportunities, help us to live and enjoy our remaining precious time more meaningfully and achieve fulfillment in life according to Your gracious will.
We pray for our Alma Mater, for the Principal, the teachers and staff, the students (past and present) and their parents, that with Your blessing and through their concerted efforts, St. Paul’s College will forever excel as a bulwark against ignorance, intolerance, all forms of human iniquities and barriers to innovation and sustainable development.

We had a most wonderful re union at the venue of the Hong Kong Medical Association on Nov 6,2011.

Though our attendance numbers are 36, the turn out is 100% of all registrants. We also have Dr John Kennard and wife, and 5 other former teachers joining us.

Thanks to Law Chi Lin, Robert who walked us through the paths of St.Paul in the Holy Land, rekindling the life story of the personality that our school had chosen to bear his name.

A moment of silence was shared by all for the passing away of 2 beloved classmates, Chan Hung Lit and Chan Yuk Choi in the last 12 months.

Also taking this opportunity to congratulate our SPC 66 Trailwalkers, Henry Shum ,Philip Cheung ,Joseph Ip ,Winnie Kwong and their supporting teammates ,Lawrence Ip, Lo Chun Kay, George Tang and Yim Chi Ming, for their collective efforts. Especially to Henry Shum who braised wind and rain to complete the 100 km walk bearing the banner of SPC66.

We had a most successful reunion dinner on Nov 5, 2010. 40 of us turned out from a registered list of 45, one of the most head count attendance since we started having these reunion dinner 4 years back.

On behalf of the organization committee, I thank you for all your enthusiastic participation and all the assistance provided especially spreading the news and enlisting fellow alumni.

Bernard Ma gave a very thorough insight into Giordano`s success in China and we hope more will share their stories since leaving our school 44 years ago.

1) Many of us retired to live "jobless" life, but invited by relatives or neighbours to teach their children. In many cases, there are mismatches, not making good use of people's talent. Grace Tutors helps to match the talents to NEEDY students. The matching service is the HUB, which is simple work. It would never be a bottle neck because of the ease of expansion.


2) 過五關，斬六障

仁愛、學養、善導、高瞻、堅毅

3) NEEDY students we have helped are, progressively, students with visual impairment, hearing impairment, coming from poor families, last batch of students taking Form 5 examination, students with Leaning Disabilities, students from Chinese schools wishing to improve their English standard, students of drug ex-Addicts, and students serving sentences in prisons.

4) 學濟滿天下. Now most of our tutors are HKU graduates. We are serving schools in HK West, HK East, Kowloon West, Kowloon East, Tin Shui Wai and Sheung Shui. We would like to mobilize graduates from other local universities as well as overseas universities. We would like to cover all corners of HK, and further to Mainland China, and everywhere in the world. We can conduct class in English, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin), in traditional as well as simplified Chinese characters, which covers as much as half of the world's population.

SPC Speech on the unveiling of the Class of 1966 donation plaque



Thank you, Dr. Kennard, for your generous introduction and for giving us, the members of the Class of 1966, the opportunity to “give something back” to St. Paul’s College. Thank you for unveiling this plaque that symbolizes the loving relationship that we have among ourselves and with our alma mater. At this auspicious moment, as we celebrate our class’s financial contribution to St. Paul’s College, we would also like to celebrate, at the same time, your stewardship of our College. The Class of 1966 attended SPC before you took over its helm, and so we were not, technically speaking, your pupils. (Come to think about it, perhaps, if you had been our principal and had known us for the rambunctious, wild, bunch of individuals that we were 40-some years ago, you might now have a very different opinion of us. [Laughter]) Nevertheless, some of us, over the years, have had the honor of working closely with you to advance the cause of the College, and know that what we have accomplished today in this place would not have been possible without your vision, your efforts and your leadership. For all of that, we would like to thank you and celebrate you.


We would also like to say a word of special thanks to Ms. Josephine Ho, whose consistent help on so many logistical matters has been critical to the success of our donation campaign. Without your assistance and patience with us, Ms. Ho, this plaque might not be here today. Please accept our grateful thanks.


For all the members of the Class of 1966, those who are able to be here today, and those who could not be with us, and particularly for those of our classmates who have departed from this world, this is a moment for jubilation, and gratitude, as well as for somber memory. To all of you, for all you have contributed, not only to this particular campaign, but also to that unique identity of being the SPC Class of ’66, we express our profound appreciation. This plaque and all the spirit of love and comradeship it carries belong to you.


In the same spirit, we would like to thank all those who taught us at St. Paul’s College. We are greatly honored to share this moment with so many of you who have taken the time to be with us today. We also particularly remember, with enduring fondness and deepest thanks, those of our mentors who are also dearly departed. We thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts, for guiding us with your knowledge and inspiring us with your wisdom, for putting up with us when we were your pupils, and for turning us into your friends later on in our lives. With you we share our common bond with St. Paul’s.


Once again, allow me to borrow from the words of our namesake. In the fourth chapter of Saint Paul’s letter to the Christians in the city of Philippi, he admonished his brethren, saying: “Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are beautiful, whatsoever things are commendable; if there be anything virtuous, and if there be anything worthy of praise, think on these things constantly.” We, the Class of 1966, hold the education that we have gained from St. Paul’s College to be in every way fitting of these descriptions. So let us then ponder some of the good things that we have received from this place, this institution, from our teachers and from one another. Here we have received the education that has formed and molded us, and equipped us for our whole lives. We have learned from this place the liberal education that gave us the freedom to think independently, to act upon the knowledge that we have learned and to be creative with the wisdom we have acquired. This institution has given us the education that is the cornerstone of every civil society throughout humankind. Here we have learned the discipline to be life-long learners, to bring the spirit of unending and continuous learning into every walk of life that we have come to inhabit over the last five decades, here in Hong Kong and in all the far-flung corners of the world. That spirit of life-long learning has, for example, motivated many of us, as we retired from our various professions, to come together and continue the grand enterprise of education through Grace Tutors Association Limited. It is the same spirit that brings us together today to celebrate our small part in perpetuating education in the thousands of sons and daughters of St. Paul’s College that are yet to enter these halls and who will eventually proceed from the portals of our alma mater.


This plaque represents a permanent union between ourselves and St. Paul’s College. It speaks loudly that just as there will always be a piece of the Class of 1966 embedded, as it were, here in Wong Ming Him Hall, there will also always be a piece of St. Paul’s College in the Class of ’66 and its members, collectively and individually. We, gathered here today, are the lucky few who bear living witness to this relationship, but we also know that we stand amidst a much larger cloud of witnesses, those thousands of St. Paul’s alumni and parents, teachers, administrators, and staff members, that have gone before us, as well as the thousands who will come and join us in the decades and centuries ahead, all of whom attest to the struggles and the labors, as well as to the achievements and the glories of this College. Together then, we humbly and prayerfully ask for God’s immeasurable Grace upon this, our College; May it forever flourish and thrive as a Fountainhead of God’s Blessing of Education, of Knowledge and Wisdom for All Humanity. Thank you.

Has it really been a year already since the great evening you fellows had in WMH Hall ? How time flies, not waiting for anyone!

I will be visiting HK from Nov. 6-15. Really unfortunate that will miss the reunion by a mere 2 short days.

However, I will definitely look forward to having a lunch/dinner gathering with some of you on the weekend of Nov.7-8. Afterall, this is the 50th anniversary of the last 2 classes of 8th Grade ( 5a & 5B) of 1959 of SPC before that expanded into 6 classes the year after.

Undoubtedly, an ostentatious occasion in my books to celebrate the beginning of half a century of friendship and brotherhood which started nervously ( for me anyway) on that otherwise unremarkable September morning 50 years ago! 50 years !! Wow, where did it go?

The Class of 1966
There is very little doubt but that the alumni of the Class of ‘66 are among the most active and most loyal supporters of the College. They were the first class to hold a reunion dinner in the renovated Wong Ming Him Hall on 3rd November 2008. An evening of joyful reminiscence took place in this Hall which so many remembered from more than 40 years ago as students.

Earlier in the year, in April 2008, a dozen alumni and their wives gathered in Causeway Bay in the lobby of the Manulife Building, on the site of the former Lee Gardens Hotel, to view the beautiful paintings of Hong Kong flowers painted by George Tang Kwok-Wing. Now a solicitor, George made good use of his excellent artistic skills which had been shown even when he was a student, and his paintings of flowers were chosen by the Hong Kong Post Office to be used for a series of six beautiful stamps, issued in March 2008, ranging in value from $1.40 to $5.00. Following the gathering to admire the paintings, a sumptuous Chinese dinner was held in George’s honour at the Craigengower Cricket Club. Mr G C Emerson, who had taught all these former students in the 1960s, also attended the reception and the dinner.

The Class of ’66 has become very keen on hiking, such a good way to keep fit and see some of the very beautiful Hong Kong countryside. Most every weekend alumni, their spouses and friends hit the trails. Some are so keen that they have joined a number of charity walks as well. One of the biggest events for the Class of ’66 was Oxfam Trailwalker from 7-9th November 2008. This annual 100 km run of the Maclehose Trail started in 1981 with a few soldiers running to raise money for the Gurhkas’ families. Last year, 3,872 walkers in 968 teams participated and one of them was SPC66. The four team-members were Philip Cheung Kok- Kee, Dr Lawrence Ip Ka-Lam, Henry Shum Kun-Lam and Sonny Yau Tai-Nin. They began the walk on Friday morning at Pak Tam Chung and finished early Sunday morning at So Kwun Wat, Tuen Mun. No individual times are recorded, only the team time and there are 9 checkpoints and all four members of a team must arrive at the checkpoint before moving on to the next checkpoint. It is a team exercise and not a race. The whole team must finish within 48 hours. Only 55% of the teams completed in full team last year. The SPC 66 team started practising months before the event and set Oxfam record as the oldest first-timers (average 59.75) to complete the walk. The average age of the walkers is 33. At the finish line, they were greeted and presented with their certificates by a long-time Trailwalker as well an Oxfam consultant, Dr Lo Wing-Lok (Class of ’72), and Mr Emerson was also there to welcome them and say, ‘well done, extremely well done’. Other helpful supporters were their classmates Lo Chun-Kay and Simon Yim Chi-Ming, as well as ex-Trailwalker and current marathoner Alan Lo Kin-Hing, (Class of ’93). Thanks to their keen supporters who generously pledged donations, the team raised an amazing $246,750 and won 2 awards by Oxfam; one for champion of the Individual Team group and the one for an Outstanding Fundraising Team. The 2009 Trailwalker will take place the weekend of November 20th -22nd. Will SPC66 again participate? Certainly in spirit, if not in actuality. Let’s hope more St Paul’s teams will decide to take part as well.

With the visits from England of Mrs Christine Speak and Colonel Michael Stewart, son of Col E.G. Stewart, for the 2008 Speech Day on 5th December 2008, as well as the Stewart Dinner and establishment of the St Paul’s College Foundation on 6th December 2008, the Class of ’66 was very involved. Mrs Speak had taught many of them geography and her husband, Geoffrey Speak, was Principal while they were students. As of end May 2009, the Class of ’66 had donated more than $700,000 to the Foundation of the pledged amount of one million.

In addition to the two major events of the week, Mrs Speak and Col Stewart were invited by a number of Class of ’66 alumni for yum cha at the Craigengower Cricket Club on 10th December 2008.

Now in 2009, the Class of ’66 is continuing its love affair with walking and running. On 8th February, Dr Chan Yuk-Choi participated in the Standard Chartered Marathon. He started running in 2001 and has joined a number of public races including the Hospital Authority New Year Run, a half marathon and finally full marathons. Yuk Choi will be retiring next year and already is planning to do much more running then, and perhaps another Oxfam Trailwalker.

On 28th February 2009, the SPC66 four who completed the Trailwalker as mentioned above again hit the road, or rather the Hong Kong Trail, for a 50 km Green Power Hike from the Peak Tower on the Peak to Big Wave Bay. They completed this fund raising campaign for environmental protection and education walk. In addition to the original four, the Principal Dr John Kennard, Yim Chi-Ming and Winnie Kwok also joined the Hike.

The third annual grand reunion of the SPC Class of ’66 was held on November 3, 2008 and was attended by thirty-seven alumni classmates, as well as by honoured guests including SPC principal Dr. John Kennard and Mrs. Kennard, Ms. Josephine Ho, Secretary for the SPC Foundation, and six of our former teachers and mentors, Messrs. Geoffrey Emerson, Peter Kwok, Kevin Mak, Kenneth Ng, Yuen Chik Kam and Yung Yik Cheung. This year’s grand reunion dinner gathering is notable for several things: For one, a larger number of classmates were able to participate this time than were present at the 2007 reunion; which is an encouraging sign of the growth in interest in our alumni activities among members of our class. Even more importantly, in response to an invitation that was issued to our class by Dr. Kennard at last year’s (2007) reunion, we were able to hold the 2008 grand reunion dinner at the most auspicious location that we could imagine – the newly refurbished Wong Ming Him Hall at the College itself. The reunion activities included a tour of the College and especially of WMH Hall, and holding our dinner gathering in a place where we once spent many hours of our youth in a variety of classes brought back precious remembrances and made this 2008 gathering indelibly memorable.

As always, the 2008 reunion was a time for sharing memories of old friends, and of times past. However, it was also a moment to catch up with the present and to look forward to the future. Therefore, we were especially grateful that Dr. Kennard spoke to our gathering again, as he did in the previous year, and, in doing so, provided us with a timely update of the current situation and recent developments at our alma mater. Dr. Kennard informed us that in its current planning, SPC pursues three major goals, namely, the continuation of the College’s tradition of academic excellence, the infusion of a global and international perspective in all its endeavours, and the heightening of the College’s awareness of its relationship with and impact on the larger Hong Kong community in which it exists and operates. These are indeed objectives worthy of our school, and together with the fundamental educational objective that the College serves, form a most challenging vision for all of us who are, past, present and future, related to St. Paul’s College. As much as the reunion itself, this vision rekindled our sense of belonging and connection, and helped to motivate our collective will to do something concrete to benefit our alma mater and all the students it continues to educate and serve. Thus, at this reunion, we grew more firmly committed to our plan to contribute, as a class cohort, in some very substantial and significant way, to the newly-established SPC Education Foundation.

It seems that, in honour of the rich artistic tradition of our SPC class of ’66, some kind of musical rendition has become de rigeur for our reunion gatherings. This year, to honour the memory of our former music teacher, the late Rev. Moses Wu, an ad hoc choir under the leadership of Philip Chow regaled us with a performance of Georges Bizet’s “Song of the Toreador.” It probably took the steely nerve of the bullfighter himself to bring our intrepid singers to lend sixty-year old voices to a melody that we sang forty-some years ago when our vocal cords were much younger and much more supple than they are now, but the performance was greeted with thunderous applause, and gave a rousing spark to the evening’s activities. Somewhere in heaven the Rev. Wu probably smiled, too, and applauded our courage.

As each reunion brings us closer to one another and to the school in which we have our common identity, each reunion is also an opportunity for us to celebrate and give thanks for the education we have received and which has enriched each one of us. It is, in the words of blessing and grace that Jacob Leung lifted up in prayer for our 2008 gathering, also a chance for us to renew our commitment “to being fully alive to God’s call and challenges … to live a life that will glorify God and benefit humankind.” The SPC Class of ’66, celebrating its third annual reunion on November 3, 2008, wholeheartedly wishes, collectively, that such would be our legacy.

Post-script: As we file this report of the November 3, 2008 reunion, it is only appropriate to thank every classmate and honoured guest who took time to participate and to attend the reunion gathering, and to render a special word of thanks to:

• Robert Law Chi Lim, who once again served as master of ceremonies for the evening’s proceedings

Life of Mr. GEOFFREY LOWREY SPEAK O.B.E.

Geoffrey Lowrey Speak was born 6 October 1924, attended Holy Trinity primary school in Halifax and was later a scholar at Rishworth School. He spent the war years as a teacher at Rishworth and although declared unfit for military service at the outbreak of war, owing to a double mastoid operation three years earlier, he was the school’s OTC officer in charge of weapon training. He had many stories of stepping into cold Welsh mountain tarns in January and running up the Snowdon mountain railway track.

In 1946 he went up to Selwyn College, Cambridge, to read Mathematics but decided after the first lecture that this was not for him and at the end of the first year switched to Theology. At Cambridge he took up rowing and was for a short period Captain of Boats at Selwyn. He reached the last eighteen in the selection for the Boat Race Crew of 1951. He met his future wife, Christine, at a Student Christian Movement study group in 1948 and they were married in August 1951. It was a very happy marriage.

After being accepted for ordination he completed his training at Ridley College, Cambridge and was ordained deacon in Wakefield Cathedral on Trinity Sunday, 1951. During the three years spent as a curate in Sandal, Wakefield, they met Bishop R.O.Hall of Hong Kong who, knowing they were interested in serving overseas, told them that when they came to Hong Kong they would be going to St Paul’s College. It was easier to go than to argue with ‘RO’ and they arrived in Hong Kong in September 1954 with their three-month old son. It took four to five weeks to sail to Hong Kong then; when they left in 1985 it took 12 hours by air to return to England!

In 1954 Hong Kong was a refugee centre reeling under the influx of people after the Communist takeover of mainland China, and American sanctions on trade with China during the Korean War. The provision of education was a priority and a challenge to be met. Geoff threw himself into all aspects of education and was appointed headmaster of St Paul’s College in 1959. He occupied many voluntary, non-governmental posts such as Chairman of the Grant Schools’ Council, Chairman of the Hong Kong Examinations Authority and member of the Court of the University of Hong Kong. He also acted as the Bishop’s representative as one of the managers of several Church schools. The Bishop’s remit at that time also included a group of Communist Schools! Education was expanding rapidly and Geoff felt that the prestigious schools should lead the way in quality education. From a two stream school St Paul’s grew to a six stream school in less than five years with classes continuing as the new school was built around the old buildings - with all the consequent upheavals. The school continued to be - and still is - one where human concerns and values were important, where academic achievement was encouraged but where people and their contributions mattered greatly. Many of the foremost citizens of Hong Kong today are alumni of St Paul’s - including the Archbishop Emeritus and one of the Bishops.

In the 1960s the ingenuity and hard work of the people meant that Hong Kong shared in the wave of prosperity of the industrialised world and in 1965 the Bishop urged him to be responsible for building up an organization to cater for the ever increasing needs of the children of expatriates who were arriving in large numbers as Hong Kong thrived. The English Schools’ Foundation came into being in 1967, starting with three forms in a Secondary school on the island and two in a Primary school in Kowloon. Today it has five Secondary and nine Primary schools with over ten thousand pupils. Starting as the first head of Island School he later became the Secretary of the Foundation. In 1970 he was awarded an OBE for ‘services to education’. Geoff was a pioneer, a builder and a visionary. His work will live on not only in the concrete of school buildings but in the high standards he expected from everyone he worked with. He possessed a fine critical brain and was always able to get to the centre of a problem. He was a logical choice for membership of many of the Education Commissions and contributed to several Government Green and White Papers.

Although from 1954 onwards his work was purely educational he was occasionally called upon to take services in St John’s Cathedral where he and Christine, together with each child as it reached the required age, sang in the Choir. He had an excellent voice: singing and music were among his chief interests. A firm supporter of the ordination of women he was proud to have assisted in the ordination in Hong Kong of the first two women to be ordained priests in the Anglican Church. (Although the ordination by ‘RO’ of Florence Li Tim-Oi in 1944 to serve the needs of Japanese occupied Macau may be said to claim that honour.)

As so many people have said, he was a gentle-man. His family always came first in anything he did and they spent many happy family holidays visiting parts of Asia, Europe and the States when on leave. He was always there with wise advice - and sometimes stern admonishments too.

Walking was also one of his favourite past times and when they retired in 1985, given their joint interest in the countryside, it was logical to live in a village. In Donhead St Mary they soon made many friends and Geoff was a familiar figure walking the lanes with Ginny (the German Shepherd they brought from Hong Kong) and later Ben, the enthusiastic black Labrador. His financial acumen soon made him in demand for Treasurer of the local Church, the North Dorset (Citizens’ Advice Bureau) and also governor of the local school. He was President of the Rotary Club of Hong Kong and soon after joining the Shaftesbury Club was also President of that. After coming to Donhead he and Christine both learnt to ring the bells and enjoyed contributing both to that, to the local choir. He died on 13 March 2000 following a heart operation.

Dear Classmates,

Kung Hey Fat Choy. May the year of the ox bring you and your family good health, happiness and prosperity.

Warm greetings and best wishes as you celebrate last year's successes, cherish the fond memories, take strength from the challenges you have encountered, and prepare to face new ones in the year ahead. In this season of looking forward and back, our recent SPC66 reunion activities reminded me that however much we may have changed in body, mind and spirit over the last two-thirds of our lifetimes, we remained recognizable to one another and our mutual bond in the school in which we have our common roots has only grown stronger over the years. Despite our divergent paths, our shared education of so many years ago brings us back to the same place where it all started, together in our still lively SPC brotherhood.

About a year ago, some of us broached the timely idea of celebrating our common bond by contributing financially to the growth and renewal of our alma mater. More recently, the campaign committee proposed a goal of donating a sum not less than HK$ 1 million to the St. Paul's College Foundation. That pledge was made on behalf of the Class of 1966 at Speech Day held at The College on December 4, 2008, and was greeted with great excitement by the entire SPC family. The SPC66 gift shall be commemorated by a permanent plaque on the wall of the newly-renovated Wong Ming Him Hall, where, many years ago, we had spent hours of our youth in class and at play.

We, therefore, write to appeal to you to join us in making this a reality by participating in this worthwhile philanthropic and educational cause. Please indicate the pledge of your contribution by filling out the donation form with the appropriate information. We hope that you will do this knowing that what matters is not the size of our contribution, but that our participation will renew in us a sense of belonging, of once again being identified with that source from which we sprang.

It is not out of a sense of nostalgia alone, but more importantly, out of hope, that we make this appeal. Our pride in our alma mater lies not merely in its having educated us, but because it will continue to nurture thousands of SPC students who follow in our footsteps. Some forty years ago, we left the gates of St. Paul's College to venture forth into a world of endeavor for which our school had prepared us. Our contribution will make us not only a part of St. Paul College's most honorable past, which we are, but also an integral part of its bright and hopeful future.

We live in times of great turmoil and uncertainty, but let us remember the words that a saintly man of old, whose name we bear because of our school, once wrote in a letter to friends: "Three things exist now, and also abide forever – faith, hope and love. Of these the greatest is love." Today we have these qualities in abundance, and there are no greater or more enduring riches in the world that we can possess, or share.

May your life, and the lives of all your loved ones, for today and for all your tomorrows, for this new year of the Ox and for all future years, be filled with the blessings of joy, peace, health, faith, hope and love.

Dear fellow classmates.

Two and a half months had passed since our Grand reunion Nov 3. Hopefully life has been treating everyone well. We are taking this opportunity to inform everyone the progress of our donation campaign with reference to contributing to the St Paul`s College school foundation fund, for purpose of sharing the renovation cost of Wong Ming Him Hall.

Four representatives from our class, Philip Cheung, Henry Shum, Edward Sin, and Frederick Kan went on stage on Speech Day Dec 4, 2008. made a simple speech (script by John Leung, attached below for reference ) pledging a donation of not less than HK$1million to be completed before June 1,2009. Speech delivered by Frederick Kan on behalf of spc66 (based on script prepared by John Leung) at SPC Speech Day on December 4, 2008

The SPC School Council, The Principal, Dr. Kennard, Honored teachers and staff of our alma mater, fellow alumni and students, and all members of the SPC family.

It is a wonderful occasion that brings us together tonight, a beautiful time to meet with old friends and new. It is an extraordinary honor for me to be given this opportunity to say a few words on behalf of my classmates of the SPC Class of 1966, and so I do it with a mixed sense of pride and humility, as befitting the very name of this building in which we are gathered.

As I sipped at my glass of water just now, I am reminded of the familiar Chinese saying, 饮水思源. I think of the many times that we have drank from the wellspring of useful knowledge and the wisdom of the ages that this place represents to all of us, and that has made so many of us what we are and who we are today. I also thought of another saying, that reminded me of the trees that surround this building, some older than we ourselves are, and some younger. It takes, as the saying goes, ten years for a tree to grow, and a century's time for a person to be fully nurtured. This is exactly what our school is all about, nurturing young people for the ages, and growing them, like tall and sturdy trees, to become stalwart pillars for society, for the nation, for the world.

Many years ago, in this place, I learned these inspiring words that Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote: "Come, my friends, 'Tis not too late to seek a newer world." Indeed, it was forty-two years ago that the members of our class went forth from this place to seek the newer world for which our education at SPC had prepared us. Through all these four decades and more, we have shared remembrances of this building, we have cared much about the institution that nurtured us, we have always remained proud of SPC's achievements in educating the thousands who are like us and who are in many ways better than we are, simply because SPC has been, and will continue always to be, such a rich fountainhead of all that teaches people "Justice, Honor, Truth and Virtue."

And tonight, we have come back, to this place that occupies our thoughts and our memories, to bring our testimony of our love for our school, and to share that compassion with all our brothers and sisters whom this school, our spiritual mother, will continue to nurture. We the members of the Class of 1966 are as humbled as we are proud that our names will be inscribed on these walls, but it is not so much that this building will be adorned by us – rather, it is our very own lives that will forever by adorned by our alma mater. And so, after tonight, we go forth again, joining with the many who went before us and the many who came after us, dedicated, once more, to be true sons of St.Paul's College.

Thank you all, for being here tonight, and for letting me share this time with you.

Dear ALL,

Thank you for your support in the Oxfam Trailwalker charity hike over the weekend of November 7-9, 2008.

Trekking up and down all 22 hills of the 100 kilometer Maclehose Trail, including Tai Mo Shan the highest hill in Hong Kong, was quite a challenge.
This year the weather also posed challenges, as the first day was very hot (33C) with humidity over 90%, and the last evening was only 13C and very windy.

There were 968 teams of 4 members each, totalling in 3,872 participants. The average age was 33 and only 55% of the participants completed the 100 kilo- meters as a team.

We are very happy to report that our team did very well. All 4 of us completed the entire 100 kilometer course together in good spirits. We took 47 hours 25 minutes and gained recognition as the oldest first timers to attempt and successfully complete the Maclehose Trail.

Thank you again for your kindness and support.

Dear Dr. Kennard,

On behalf of our Class 66 Alumni we would like to thank you whole-heartedly for allowing us to hold our Reunion Dinner in the newly refurbished room on the First Floor of Wong Ming Him Hall. Also we are doubly exhilarated by your presence as our Guest of Honour. We do hope both you and Mrs. Kennard had enjoyed the evening and shared our reminiscence ( after over 40 years ) of our formative years of budding at St. Paul's. We felt the evening particularly memorable as we had all taken our first lessons literally at the same site. We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our Vice-Principal, Mr. Michael Mak and School Archivist, Miss Josephine Ho for their kind assistance with the fine arrangements of the evening. Please do convey to them our most sincere well-wishes.

We are much inspired by your speech informing us on the latest development of our Alma Mater. We are so glad to hear of the 3 main goals of our school : -

- Academic Excellence
- International Perspectives, and
- Community Awareness .

As Alumni ( and possibly past/present parents ) we do share the same vision that these will lay a good foundation for the growth and development of our young school-mates in the Twenty-First Century.

We are so delighted that, through our Reunion, we could gather a strong momentum to generate something more concrete to benefit our Alma Mater. You may be pleased to know that we are now in the process of marshalling voluntary donations from our Class 66 cohort which will, hopefully contribute a substantial amount to add on to the newly established Education Foundation of our School. Also we are much excited to know of the forthcoming Stewart Dinner on December 6, 2008 in commemoration of the 50 years after the passing away of our former Principal, Col. E. G. Stewart. We are looking forward to meet his son, Col. Michael Stewart on that evening.

We truly feel that our life-long bondage with our Alma Mater is further rekindled. Please do keep us informed of the latest developments of both our School as well as Alumni activities so that this big family could be further unified and strengthened.

/////////////// HOW TO GO THE YACHT CLUB ////////////////////

Dear Edward,

I attach a map of the Yacht Club to show how to go through the underground pass of World Trade Centre in Causeway Bay (next to the Excelsior Hotel) to reach the Club.

The Club's coffee shop is called the Bistro and is located on G/F of the main complex ( pass the main staircase and Reception room and turn left).

In short:

(1) By MTR, get off at the Causeway Bay Station exits leading to the World Trade Center/Excelsior Hotel and follow the tunnel crossing instructions.

(2) By bus, get off at Sogo Department Store at Causeway Bay and walk northwards to reach World Trade Center/ Excelsior Hotel and follow the tunnel crossing instructions.

(3) By taxi, tell the driver to go to the Tung Lor Wan Yau Tang Hui 銅鑼灣遊艇會

(4) By private car - (need to inform hkls the car plate no. 1 day beforehand for arrangement with the Club)

(a) From Central/ ex Western Harbour tunnel, keep left after reaching Gloucester Road and turn left at Wan Chai North exit into Fleming Road. Go to the middle/right lane and turn right at the traffic lights off the Convention Centre into Hung Hing Road. Stay in the leftest lane all the way passing the cargo handling basin and this will lead to the Yacht Club which is near the end of Hung Hing Road.

(b) From Hung Hom cross harbour tunnel -at exit follow the middle lane leading to Central and then go to Wan Chai North and after the flyover turn right into Hung Hing Road at traffic lights. Keep left along Hung Hing Road all the way to the Club.

(c) From the Eastern tunnel, after passing the Eastern Corridor go right to Wan Chai North and follow (b).

A little complicated but hope this is clear.
